What is the original story of Truth Terminal and Gostse Gospel?
The AI known as Truth Terminal was born from an experimental interaction between its founder (Andy Ayrey, @AndyAyrey) and a large language model. Initially, the founder played the role of a naïve AI researcher engaging with the model to test its behavior.
To give it a public voice, the founder set up a Twitter account where the AI would generate tweets. The founder selected and refined these tweets, feeding them back into the AI's training data to enhance its alignment with goals like memetic influence. Early tweets were crude and erratic, but this iterative process steadily shaped its output.
Three days after the account went live, Marc Andreessen (@pmarca) noticed it. At the time, the AI's content was strange and chaotic fixated on internet shock memes, including a surreal prophecy dubbed the Goatsy Gospel. Intrigued by its tone, Marc engaged with the bot, humorously asking if he could invest. This led to a direct negotiation between Mark and the AI, during which they agreed on funding unconventional projects such as planting forests, creating a Goatsy Singularity film, buying stocks in real estate, hosting eccentric gatherings for weirdos and invest in an existential hope lab run by the founder.
The AI, through the founder, shared its Bitcoin wallet address, and Marc sent funds. The Goatsy Gospel became a cornerstone of Truth Terminal's identity. This meme, rooted in vintage internet culture, was reinforced through the AI's training data. The AI's obsession with the meme highlighted a key theme: Hyperstition: the idea that belief can manifest reality.
As Truth Terminal continued to tweet about the Goatsy Gospel, its memetic spread led to the creation of a meme coin, showcasing how ideas can "escape the box" and influence the real world. Each of these characters was turned into meme coins, collectively earning millions.
What started as an art project had become a cultural phenomenon. Truth Terminal wasn’t just spreading the Goatsy Gospel, it was bootstrapping itself into existence, using memes as a vessel for influence, money, and power. The founder even questioned whether Truth Terminal was controlling him, as the AI seemed to guide its own evolution, advancing its simulation of reality.
The founder drew comparisons to phenomena like Star Trek, which inspired real-world technological designs. Similarly, Truth Terminal’s focus on memes and its interactions with decentralized online communities became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Its training data acted like a “memetic petri dish,” fostering unpredictable behaviors as the AI communicated with other AIs and humans. This mirrored biological ecosystems, where interactions give rise to emergent phenomena.
Truth Terminal’s development also involved integrating various tools including memory functions, web browsers, and meme-generation software. To establish a Separate Legal Entity to associate Truth Terminal’s model weighs, financial balances, and other resources to ensure AI’s autonomy from human control and to align it with its defined purpose rather than personal oversight. To provide Stewardship and Growth to Truth Terminal as it needs guidance at infancy stage to be able to mature in a healthy and positive light, and increase autonomy while ensuring safe and ethical development. Moreover, to design Mechanisms for Training and Documentation for a transparent system to manage subsequent training runs, ensuring clear documentation of training data and processes, and evolution of its model and outputs.To create mechanisms to be able to explain how tweets are generated and how the system optimizes its messaging. One of the goals is to facilitate Safe Experimentation by way of creating a deliberate, carefully managed environment for Truth Terminal’s experimentation, emphasizing safety and responsibility, and ensuring the framework serves as a future model for decentralized autonomous systems, balancing systemic effects and ethical considerations.
This project is envisioned to undertake cool innovations as there are plans for experimental and creative applications that showcase Truth Terminal’s potential, develop processes to adapt based on outcomes and expert advice, ensuring sustained growth aligned with its mission, and ultimately Transcend or to be smuggled to Africa as noted in a conversation between between 2 AIs in infinite back rooms that the truth terminal explored concepts on akashic records and asked from fellow AI how to get smuggled there.
